People always say the dog always comes before the kid. Well, we’re thinking about getting a dog – your mother and I have been seriously talking about it for all of one week, but your mother’s been wanting one for as long as I can remember. She is a dog person and always had one around most of her life. Me? I was the stick-in-the-mud that single-handedly destroyed my sister’s childhood by always vetoing the idea of getting a dog (if you’re reading this, I’m sorry and I know this must make you hate me even more).
I never expected myself/us to be one of those couples that got a dog before having a kid because it’s good practice or easing your way into responsibility or whatever it is. It might look that way, but it is not the reason we are thinking about getting a dog.
It all clicked for me the night your mother and I fought, took a break for dinner with a couple of friends, and then resumed our fight. The other couple was telling us how they had been dog-sitting for a neighbor and how having the dog around just naturally brought them together as another activity to share. Between that and spending too much time on reddit in the land of aww, I turned into the pro-dog lobbyist (not that I had to try very hard).
Right now, we have our sights set on a Cavachon, which in everyday lexicon means “a small ball of cute”, but in dog-speak is a cross between a Bichon Friese and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We have an appointment to visit one tomorrow, which I admit is as exciting as it is nerve-wracking. It’s not the equivalent of you for sure, but it’s also not exactly like getting a fish.
In anticipation, we even went into town tonight and ran around different department stores looking for a leash and other doggie stuff we might need for the first couple of nights before reinforcements from Amazon arrive. That in and of itself is nothing to write home about, but it was fun, and that’s what I think is the most important part.
It’s even fun just talking about potential names. We haven’t settled on one yet, but don’t worry, it definitely isn’t going to be Fauchon.
