Dear Fauchon,
Your mom and I sat down to dinner the other night and started talking about goals we would set for ourselves in the month of March. This in itself isn’t extraordinary by any means. Goal-setting is pretty normal for the average person. However, when I tried to imagine the types of goals my own parents would’ve set at any point in their lives, I drew a blank. That’s weird.
I’ve always thought goals are an interesting way to peer into someone’s head. You learn about what drives them, what interests them, and what is important to them. Very often I think adults are just categorized by their jobs because it takes up the majority of their time and it’s probably reasonable to make the assumption that they either 1) like the job, 2) like the compensation, or 3) like the difference that they’re making in the world. But your parents are also multifaceted people!! We also have desires beyond making a living and living comfortably!
So I figure if I document our goals, maybe you’ll see another side of us without me boring you with the details. (And maybe it’ll also keep us honest with following through on them too!)
Your mothers goals:
- Exercise four times a week
- Host another pop up brunch
- Keep on schedule with her foodblog
- Generate three extra blog posts for backup
- Finish drafting up a legal document for my dad
My goals:
- Exercise four times a week
- Finish writing two more chapters for my book
- Keep up with writing two letters (posts) a week to you
- Make sure all my projects at work stay on schedule
Together goals:
- Finish filing our taxes
- Eat out only once a week (an austerity measure because we are under the impression if we do this, we can retire a month earlier)
- Travel somewhere new (maybe Oxford?)
Draw whatever conclusion you want from those goals. That’s who we are!
So now seems like a good time to share the song I’ve had on repeat at this point in my life. Yes, your dad will listen to something by Selena Gomez. It is the only Selena Gomez song I’ve ever listened to. I swear.
